Christmas Cheer

Christmas Cheer is the longest running service club at Burnaby North.  Established in 1989 by Barry Street, Christmas Cheer has been helping the Burnaby Christmas Bureau each year. Christmas Cheer actually started as a sub-committee from Spirit Committee and it became its own entity in 1989.  Since 1989, the club has raised an average of $10,000 each year.  CHEX (the Executive Group of Christmas Cheer) organizes the incredible fundraising campaign on behalf of the school.

Christmas Cheer meets every Wednesday at lunch from mid-September to December.  Students can participate in the various sub-groups which include: marketing, publicity, baking and sewing.  Students organize lunchtime bake sales, sew Santa hats and stockings, make decorations, and organize fund raising events. All students are welcome to participate.  Over 100 students sign up each year making Christmas Cheer one of the largest clubs in the school.

2009 marked the 20th anniversary of Christmas Cheer.  (There has been a bit of a debate among the Chairs because 2008 should have been the actual 20th anniversary.)  Both the 2008 and 2009 campaigns were the most successful years to date.  $14,500 was raised in both 2008 and 2009.  Since its inception, over $200,000 has been raised by Christmas Cheer for the Burnaby Christmas Bureau.

One of the highlights of Christmas Cheer is the annual Christmas Cheer Carnival.  Students in Kindergarten to Grade 3 from all the elementary schools in Burnaby are invited to the school to participate in fun and games.  Admission is by donation and the children get a free hot dog for completing the different activities.  Countless hours are spent planning for this event and many high school students give up their free time to volunteer to make this event such a success.  The first carnival was in 2001.  We had more volunteers than participants.  Since then, the event has grown each year.

2010 marked the 10th anniversary of Mr. Sokugawa being the sponsor of Christmas Cheer.  The 2010 version of Christmas Cheer was another successful campaign.  On Friday, December 17th, CHEX presented a cheque to Burnaby Christmas Bureau for $10,000.

CHEX 2011 is being organized to make next year another successful year.
