Karing 4 Kids

Karing 4 Kids began in the fall of 2004 when Erica Damiani and Michelle Leong approached Mr. Sokugawa to sponsor a new club at the school.  The club began with six dedicated members who wanted to make life for children in our community a better place.  Today, there are over 30 Kare Bears who along with the executives organize various events throughout the year.

In December of each year since 2004, K4K members put together five food hampers along with Christmas presents to needy families within our school community.  The highlight is the shopping trip to buy supplies tor the five families.  Each hamper is carefully wrapped with Christmas paper and cellophane and delivered to each family by the school's Aboriginal Support Teacher.

Over the past five years, Karing 4 Kids organized 10,000 for 1, the largest food collection drive in the school's history.  For a month before the food drive, K4K executives created a marketing campaign which has never been duplicated.  "It's Coming", "10,000 for 1" posters were plastered all over the school and the 2400 students along with the staff had no idea what it was.  Finally, the event began and students collected over 10,000 items of food for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank.  In subsequent years, the food drive campaign became 5,000 for 1, and eventually the 5K March.

K4K has also fundraised for other charities such as the Sunny Hill Children's Hospital as well as the Make A Wish Foundation (BC & Yukon).

The highlight of the Karing 4 Kids is the annual Spring Carnival, "Beachfest".  All Kindergarten to Grade 3 students from Burnaby are invited to this free event.  Children participate in fun and games.  Admission is by donation and the children get a free hot dog for completing the different activities.  Countless hours are spent planning for this event and many high school students give up their free time to volunteer to make this event such a success.  The first year of the carnival was the most successful one with over 700 children participating.  This event still attracts about 300 students per year.

Karing 4 Kids meets every Tuesday at lunch in Room 211.  New members are always welcome.
